Kaizer Chiefs Striker International Dream Crushed by Political Turmoil
Kaizer Chiefs forward Flavio Silva has seen his dream of an international debut brought to an abrupt and disappointing halt, with his first cap for Guinea-Bissau now likely to be delayed until he is 30.
The 29-year-old striker was poised to represent his country after being called up for a friendly match against Angola on November 18 in Luanda.
Silva has enjoyed a dream start for the Soweto giants, delivering an impressive four goals in his first five league games. This prolific form immediately caught the attention of the Guinea-Bissau national team coach, Emiliano Te, who subsequently named the Amakhosi's number 77 in his final 23-man squad.
According to KickOff, the friendly against Angola presented a golden opportunity, especially given the absence of several other established strikers, including Beto, who plays for English Premier League club Everton.
However, in a cruel twist of fate for Silva, the entire international camp has been cancelled. Reports confirm that the planned match against Angola is off. Guinea-Bissau has been replaced in the fixture by Zambia, who will now face the Angolans after their match against Bafana Bafana on Saturday.
A Federation 'Absorbed in Politics'
The reason for the sudden cancellation stems not from a sporting issue, but from a period of intense political turmoil within Guinea-Bissau. The nation is currently enveloped in uncertainty ahead of critical national elections scheduled for November 23
This political climate has had a direct and damaging ripple effect on the country's football operations. It has been reported that the leadership of the Federação de Futebol da Guiné-Bissau (the nation's football federation) has become "absorbed in political activities" as the election date nears.
This distraction has allegedly led to a severe lack of commitment and focus on the national team's activities during the official FIFA window. Despite a prior agreement being in place between the two Portuguese-speaking countries, the federation's political preoccupations led to a failure to follow through on the arrangements, forcing the entire camp to be unceremoniously called off.
A Long Wait for a Second Chance
For Silva, the disappointment means his focus must now abruptly pivot back to his responsibilities at club level. His interest will switch to Kaizer Chiefs' upcoming continental campaign, where his goal-scoring prowess will be vital in demanding CAF Confederation Cup games against Egyptian powerhouses Al Masry and Zamalek.
The road back to the national team, however, now looks significantly longer. Guinea-Bissau's failure to qualify for the upcoming AFCON finals means their competitive schedule for the new year is empty. The national team's next games are not expected to take place until the next international window in March.
By that time, Silva will be just days away from celebrating his 30th birthday. The window to make his international debut while still in his 20s has been slammed shut by circumstances completely out of his control. His only option now is to maintain his red-hot form for the Glamour Boys over the coming months, hoping his club performances are enough to warrant a second call-up when his nation's footballing body eventually returns its attention to the pitch.
