Kenya U17 forward Trevor Nasasiro has shared his thoughts after scoring the match-winning goal in the Junior Stars’ 2–1 comeback victory over Rwanda in their second CECAFA U17 AFCON qualifier in Ethiopia on Friday.

Nasasiro’s composed finish in the 77th minute, created by super-sub Nicholas Ochola, completed a spirited turnaround for William Muluya’s side.

The victory lifted Kenya to four points in the group and kept their AFCON qualification hopes firmly on track ahead of a decisive meeting with South Sudan on Monday.

This Win Was For The Country

Reflecting on his contribution, Nasasiro emphasized the importance of the collective effort behind Kenya’s comeback.

“I thank God because he gave us a win, and the goal was for the country, not for us,” he said.

Kenya had fallen behind just before halftime after Rwanda capitalized on a swift counter-attack—an issue Nasasiro believes must be urgently corrected if the Junior Stars hope to go far in the tournament.

“We must not concede first. Everything we do is for the country first. We gave ourselves unnecessary pressure among the players and technical bench,” he noted, referencing how the early goal shifted the match’s tempo.

The forward stressed that the team needs more control in possession to avoid the type of nervy moments that characterized the first half.

“We have to keep the ball and score first because that pressure brings forth confusion and makes us disoriented, and that is not what we want if we want to win this tournament.”

Nasasiro also revealed the straightforward formula the players have been urged to follow by coach Muluya. “Only the basics. We must follow what the coach is telling us and then apply them in training. Whatever we do in training is what we must replicate on the pitch.”

Looking ahead to Monday’s decisive tie, the goalscorer underscored the need for composure and sharper execution in key areas.

“We need to be calm in our initial third. In their third, we have to have urgency, and it will help us get more goals.”

Junior Stars will be taking on South Sudan on Monday as they seek to consolidate a place in the semi finals.
