After securing back-to-back Olympic and World 800m titles in 2021 and 2022, Emmanuel Korir has been conspicuously absent from the sport's top ranks.

The men's 800m has experienced an unprecedented surge in recent years. In 2024, an astonishing 12 men broke the 1:43 barrier, a record that was shattered again in 2025 when 17 athletes achieved the feat.

With podium finishes at the Paris 2024 Olympics and 2025 World Championships demanding times in the 1:41 range, the sport is undeniably in a golden age.

However, the 2021 Tokyo Olympic champion, a key figure in Kenya's dynasty in the event, has been the missing figure.

Emmanuel Korir's victories at the 2022 World Championships and the 2021 and 2022 Diamond League finals solidified his status as the man to beat.

However, his victory at the Diamond League final in Zurich in September 2022 remains the last time he ran under 1:46. He competed sparingly in 2023 and 2024 with modest results and did not race at all in 2025. A combination of injuries, sponsorship issues, and personal challenges appears to have derailed his career.

Emmanuel Korir: A Fateful Car Crash

The beginning of Emmanuel Korir's struggles can be traced back to a car accident in May 2019. While driving from Eldoret to Nairobi to catch a flight for the Doha Diamond League, his car was totalled in a crash. He sustained injuries to the left side of his body, with his shin being the most affected.

Although he managed to compete in Doha, the pain lingered. "He was able to persist through the pain," his Houston-based physiotherapist, Kiplimo Chemirmir, told LetsRun.com. "It wasn’t that bad, but something was there that we couldn’t figure out."

The injury persisted, contributing to his absence during the COVID-disrupted 2020 season. The postponement of the Olympics proved to be a blessing in disguise.

Following his Olympic triumph, Emmanuel Korir sought a significant contract increase from his sponsor, Nike. Despite a slow start to the season, he once again delivered on the biggest stage, winning the 2022 World Championship title in Eugene. Soon after, he signed a new sponsorship deal with Puma.

Emmanuel Korir: Injuries, and Equipment Issues

While 2021 and 2022 were challenging, Emmanuel Korir persevered. However, 2023 marked a turning point. According to Chemirmir, Korir struggled with his new Puma equipment, finding the training shoes unstable and the spikes too stiff. His old leg injury, stemming from the 2019 crash, also resurfaced.

“He started saying he feels heavy,” Chemirmir recalled. “We tried to help him here. We had some therapy here because he started complaining about pains coming back.”

In a desperate search for a solution, Emmanuel Korir even visited Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt in Germany, the renowned physician credited by Usain Bolt for his career longevity.

Compounding his physical struggles was the emotional toll of his close friend and training partner Michael Saruni's absence. The two had trained together since their time at the University of Texas at El Paso, but Saruni's career was also facing its own challenges, leaving Emmanuel Korir without a key member of his support system.

Emmanuel Korir Heartbroken by Michael Saruni’s Doping Incident

According to Michael Chemirmir, Emmanuel Korir was also deeply affected by a four-year doping ban handed to his friend and fellow athlete, Michael Saruni, in 2023. Saruni had attempted to evade a doping test at the Kenyan championships the previous year.

"It was a big betrayal to him," Chemirmir said, describing Korir's devastation. "Sometimes you’d just find [Emmanuel] sitting down in the corner, praying and crying... It really destroyed him."

The combination of his own injury struggles, Saruni's suspension, and the loneliness of being based in El Paso, Texas, far from his home in Kenya, led to concerns for Emmanuel Korir's mental health.

Chemirmir noted that Korir briefly saw a psychologist in Texas before returning to Kenya midway through 2023. The initial plan was for him to come back to the US in 2024 to focus on the 400m, an event where he placed sixth at the 2019 World Championships, but he never returned.

Information about Emmanuel Korir's current status has been scarce. His coach, Paul Ereng, and his agent, Karen Holland, did not respond to multiple interview requests. His former sponsor, Puma, only confirmed that they no longer have a contract with him.

Emmanuel Korir himself offered a brief update via an Instagram message to LetsRun.com, writing, "Thanks for your concern. I’ve been quiet, but not gone. I took time off to heal and reset after some injuries." He did not, however, respond to a formal interview request.

Chemirmir, who was once so close to Korir that the Olympic champion gifted him his gold medal, has not seen him since he left for Kenya in 2023.

He occasionally hears from Korir, who is reportedly living on his family's farm near Eldoret and has been meeting with a psychologist. While Korir is still nursing an ankle injury, Chemirmir says he is not retired.

"He has an injury that needs a lot of extra attention," Chemirmir explained. "He needs about six treatments a week. Well in Kenya, you cannot get that. And sometimes when you worry about your contract, you worry about the races, not being fit, that’s how people end up doping."

"We want to make sure he doesn’t feel alone," he added. "We’ve been trying to help him, but he hasn’t been willing to receive the help."

Now 30 years old, the path back to elite competition grows more challenging for Korir with each passing year. Chemirmir remains supportive but realistic about the immense effort required.
