'I hope this is the first of many victories' - Alonso speaks following first Madrid's win
Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Osasuna in the La Liga season opener on Tuesday night.
It marked a special return to the Santiago Bernabéu for the coach, and he was happy to reward the fans with a win he hopes will be the first of many.
What Alonso said
"There are positives, starting with the result, which is the most important thing. Osasuna had more time for their pre-season, and it showed; they were a very well-prepared team. If we had scored early on, the context of the match would have changed completely. Returning to the Bernabéu was special for me, unforgettable.
"It was very nice to be back here, and I hope this is the first of many victories. What I like most is the mystique, the greatness of the club—not just the present, but its history and the future that lies ahead. All the debutants performed well; these are players who will help us," Alonso stated, via Abola.
"There were good things and others we need to improve. It's a long road, but we were organized. We lacked some sharpness in the final third and struggled to create clear-cut chances. I am sure the team will improve and find its rhythm. We are still in a preparatory phase, but this win gives us some breathing room," the Spaniard added.
"Osasuna had their game plan. It was difficult to find space. At least they didn't hit us on the counter; we managed to play a lot in their half. We were missing that final pass; we have to keep improving.
"We didn't have much time to prepare for this; we expected Osasuna to press a bit higher. We have players for these situations, with guys who can attack down the flanks, get into the box... These are scenarios we will face again, and we must prepare better," the manager said.
He also commented on the performance of the match-winner, Kylian Mbappé. "After his first year, I think he wants more. I don't know if it's because of the shirt number or his ambition to win. You can feel that he wants to perform better individually and inspire those around him. You see his desire in his daily work, and today he produced those moments of magic that were decisive," said Alonso.
