‘He Needs to Get Out’ - Cameroon Fans Turn on Samuel Eto’o After Indomitable Lions Miss Direct World Cup Ticket

Tensions boiled over in the stands of Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium on Monday night as Samuel Eto'o, president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), was verbally attacked by supporters during Cameroon's crucial match against Angola.

The on-pitch action, which ended in a frustrating 0-0 draw for the Indomitable Lions, was overshadowed by a dramatic confrontation in the presidential box. A group of fans, reportedly invited by Eto'o himself, began to hurl abuse at the football legend.

The situation escalated when one furious supporter directly blamed Eto'o for the team's struggles, shouting, "He needs to get out of there! Idiot! It's because of him we're not qualified!,” the fan said as per Africa Foot.

Eyewitness accounts suggest an exasperated Eto'o responded angrily to the hecklers, all while in the presence of Minister of Sports, Jean Dedieu Momo.

However, the minister later provided a different perspective on the incident, defending the FECAFOOT president's conduct.

"Completely false. I was at the stadium, sitting in the same row as president Samuel Eto'o,” said Momo.

“There was a group of individuals, among whom I recognised Baongla, the so-called son of President Paul Biya (he's not his son at all). They kept heckling the president, even though they had been invited by Samuel Eto'o himself.

“Security wanted to forcibly remove them because their rude behaviour was disturbing the entire box. We were all ashamed of such provocative conduct, which was filmed by their accomplice with the aim of tarnishing president Eto'o, who remained dignified and did not stoop to their level," the minister further said.

The goalless draw leaves Cameroon's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup hanging by a thread, as the team was unable to secure a much-needed victory that would have put them in a good position for the playoffs to next year’s tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Cape Verde stole the coveted World Cup ticket ahead of Cameroon after finishing top of Group D with 23 points, four more than the Indomitable Lions, who face an anxious wait to know if they will be one of the four best second-placed teams that will go into the playoffs.
