Harambee Stars’ Marvin Nabwire Reflects on Harsh Fan Reception During AFC Leopards Debut
Harambee Stars midfielder Marvin Nabwire has candidly recalled the unwelcome reception he received from AFC Leopards fans during his debut back in 2018, describing it as one of his toughest experiences as a young player.
Now regarded as one of Kenya’s most influential midfielders, Nabwire played a key role in helping Kenya reach the quarterfinals of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after a standout season with Kenya Police FC.
Known for his energetic runs, tough tackling, and ability to influence games in the final third, many believe he would have scooped the FKF Premier League MVP award last season had the federation held its gala night.

But Nabwire’s rise to prominence had a rocky start. Fresh from completing his studies at Kakamega High School, where he starred for the Green Commandos, he was snapped up by Leopards in 2018.
However, with Ingwe fans desperate for an end to their 27-year league title drought, many were reluctant to embrace a rookie in the starting XI.
The Fans Wanted Me Subbed off Five Minutes into My Debut
Speaking to Pulse Sports, Nabwire recalled how Leopards fans reacted during his debut against Posta Rangers in February 2018.
“After I left school, the fans did not take too kindly to seeing a rookie playing the match. They started signaling the famous subbing-off gesture for me to be taken off after just five minutes. It was funny to me because I was not expecting it.”
Beyond football, Nabwire revealed that he might have pursued music had he not made it as a professional footballer:
“I probably would have become a singer if I had not become a footballer. Bongo would have been my genre.”
He also shared details of his match-day diet — rice and chicken — which he says provide the right balance of energy and easy digestion before games.
On the international stage, Nabwire praised Benni McCarthy’s coaching style and personality, describing the South African as a mentor whose experience at the highest level has been invaluable.
“He is a brilliant coach who interacts with people and never makes anyone feel out of place. Working with him is amazing because he has worked with bigger calibre players we look up to.”
Despite receiving a late call-up to Kenya’s CHAN 2024 squad, Nabwire has since cemented his place, earning the manager’s trust and featuring regularly in the last two international windows.
