Harambee Stars Goalkeeper Under Fire Over Shaky Performance in South Africa
Harambee Stars goalkeeper Ian Otieno became the subject of criticism in South Africa following his performance for his club Richards Bay at the weekend.
Richards Bay took on title-chasing Orlando Pirates on Friday and were on the verge of claiming a major scalp only for lapses in concentration at key moments to earn the Soweto giants a share of the spoils with the match being drawn 2-2.
Richards Bay took the lead after 10 minutes when Thulani Gumede hammered home from range but Pirates equalized after 52 minutes when Oswin Appollis scored from the box when Otieno failed to make it a tight angle for him although his defenders had left him exposed.
Six minutes later, Lindokuhle Zikhali restored Richards Bays’ lead and they were on course to taking all three points until deep in stoppage time. Lebone Seema curled in from distance and beyond Otieno for 2-2 to leave the hosts heartbroken.
Otieno had a night to forget as he appeared overwhelmed by the pressure of facing the Buccaneers, having fumbled the ball multiple times and struggling to command his penalty area.
Kenyan Keeper’s Worrying Moments
From the first half, Otieno looked uncertain, especially when dealing with corners. Despite his imposing physical presence, he failed to assert himself. While Thalente Mbatha's powerful 17th-minute strike was difficult to handle.
A close analysis of the match suggests that Otieno's repeated errors were a key factor in Richards Bay's failure to secure all three points. His poor handling of aerial balls forced his defenders into last-ditch clearances. In a telling moment, he received a yellow card for time-wasting—arguably his most effective tactic of the night to protect his team's position.
The Rich Boyz delivered a commendable performance, putting a talented and motivated Pirates side under significant pressure. Coach Papi Zothwane had earlier described his team's win over Stellenbosch as a sign of progress, and his players proved him right. After taking a 2-1 lead in the second half, the match was theirs to lose.
Otieno's most glaring error came in the 89th minute when he dropped a long-range shot, leading to a scramble that saw the ball cross the line. The incident visibly angered his teammates, who rushed towards him in frustration. Fortunately for the keeper, the goal was ultimately disallowed, sparing him further embarrassment.
