In an exclusive interview with Telecomasia.net, the goalkeeper revealed that his main driver for joining Gor Mahia was a burning ambition to finally win the FKF Premier League title after nearly a decade in Kenya's top flight.
Byrne Omondi: The Allure of a League Title
When asked why he chose Gor Mahia, Byrne Omondi was clear about his ambitions. "Gor Mahia is a big team and the competition is brilliantly high. As a player, you always want to go where you will be challenged to be better," he explained.
"This is a team that is fighting for the league title every season, and there is no room to compromise. That was the biggest attraction for me. I have played in the Premier League for almost 10 years, and I have yet to win it. Joining Gor is a massive opportunity for me to try and achieve my first-ever league title."
Byrne Omondi: A New Chapter at Gor Mahia
Reflecting on his first few games with his new club, Byrne Omondi expressed his satisfaction. "It has been great so far," he said.
"I have played full minutes, and keeping three consecutive clean sheets has been the cherry on top. It is a great club and like a huge family. Being here has been brilliant both on and off the field."
He also highlighted the healthy competition within the squad. "We are three good goalkeepers here with Gad (Mathews) and Saha (Kevin Omondi), both of whom have won the Golden Glove. We keep pushing each other and ensuring we are at our best. The bond between us has been brilliant."
Byrne Omondi: Handling the Pressure
Playing for both a top club like Gor Mahia and the national team comes with immense pressure, a reality Byrne Omondi acknowledges.
"The pressure is always there," he admitted. "At Gor and the national team, it's always higher. It has also increased, thanks to the performance we put in at CHAN. Everyone expects you to have a good game."
"There are some bad days in the office, but the fans never think about this. However, I always keep calm, and my own ambition to do well helps me. The experience I've gained over the years also helps me deal with the pressure."
Byrne Omondi: The Impact of CHAN
Byrne Omondi credits the recent CHAN tournament as a pivotal moment in his career. "CHAN was a really great experience. Everyone who was in that team can attest to the same; it was the best national team experience," he shared.
"We performed really well, and it allowed us to show what we can do individually and as a team. It was a memorable and life-changing experience for me. CHAN changed my life."
He highlighted the tournament's role as a launchpad for many of his teammates, noting the likes of Alphonce Omija and Ryan Ogam, who secured moves abroad.
Alphonce Omija signed with Tunisian football club Étoile Sportive du Sahel, with Ryan Ogam signing with Austrian Club Wolfsberger AC.
