Gor Mahia salvaged a point from the jaws of defeat when substitute Ebenezer Assifuah scored late as they rallied to secure a 1-1 draw at home to Kenya Police on Sunday.

K’Ogalo had gone down early after Brian Chonjo’s 22nd minute goal and had seen Police goalkeeper Daniel Ogembo deny them a number of times until four minutes from time when they found a way past the law enforcers.

Chonjo had scored after a goal-mouth melee that saw the Gor Mahia defenders fail to clear the ball in the box, forcing it past goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, but Police needed their custodian to hold onto their lead for long.

Police Goalkeeper with Heroic Acts

Ogembo pulled off a great save just before halftime to keep out Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw, who had headed brilliantly from close range.

The Police goalkeeper continued his heroic act in the second half when he denied Adu-Kwaw again before keeping out Alpha Onyango’s thunderous shot with a good save.

Just past the hour mark, Assifuah missed a great opportunity to level matters from a Jackson Dwang corner, failing to connect well with the ball.

By this time, Gor Mahia were in the ascendancy with Shariff Musa as well as substitutes Assifuah and Ben Stanley Omondi causing the Police defence plenty of problems.

K’Ogalo would get their reward in the 86th minute when the enterprising Musa brought in a delightful cross which the Police defence failed to deal with, the ball falling to Assifuah, who was free in the box, and the Ghanaian rifled a low shot into the back of the net.

The draw saw Gor Mahia take their tally to 65 points from 31 games, seven more than second-placed AFC Leopards, who have a game in hand. It means Ingwe can close within four points, if they win their game in hand, and make it an interesting title race in the final three games of the season.
