Allan Thigo: Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars’ Legendary ‘90-Minute Man’ Passes Away
The Kenyan football community is in mourning following the death of Allan Thigo, an iconic figure for both Gor Mahia and the Harambee Stars.
The legendary midfielder passed away on Saturday evening at his home in Bungoma County.
His family confirmed the news, stating that Thigo, who had been battling a long-term illness, was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital after his condition worsened. The exact cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
"He passed away some 30 minutes ago," his wife, Dorcas Simiyu, told Nation Sport on Saturday evening.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest attacking midfielders in Kenya's history, Thigo was a dominant force in the 1970s and 1980s. His exceptional skill and commanding presence on the field earned him the nicknames "Midfield General" and the "90-Minute Man" for his stamina and the rarity of him ever being substituted.
Kenya and Gor Mahia’s Most Revered Figures
Thigo was a key member of the historic Harambee Stars squad that qualified for Kenya's first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in 1972, held in Cameroon. Although Kenya did not advance past the group stage, the team secured a respectable fifth-place finish in the eight-team tournament.
At the club level, Thigo is most famously associated with Gor Mahia. He served as a player-coach when the club won the league title unbeaten in 1976 and again in 1979. In that same year, he was instrumental in leading Gor Mahia to the final of the Africa Cup Winners' Cup, where they ultimately lost to Cameroon's Canon Yaounde. He also had a spell with Kisumu Hot Stars.
After hanging up his boots, Thigo transitioned into coaching, returning for a second stint at the helm of Gor Mahia in 2008.
