Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor is refusing to panic after his team threw away their massive advantage in the FKF Premier League title race.

Akonnor watched his team lose 1-0 to Tusker in Mwea on Tuesday a result that left them now just two points ahead of second-placed AFC Leopards with seven matches remaining.

It is a blow to the Gor Mahia coach, whose team were leading by 10 points in mid-March, but the Ghanaian tactician is not pressing the panic buttons just yet.

“It is not just [two points], with two points, we can win the league,” Akonnor said on Azam TV. “Today, if the league is over, we have won and so we will continue with the momentum and try to get a better result in our next match.”

Akonnor’s side had built good momentum at the start of the year and even put together a seven-match winning run from mid-January to the end of February but two draws and a loss in their last five games have allowed Leopards to close in.

Even so, the tactician remains confident that the record Kenyan champions are on course to reclaiming the title they last won in 2024.

“We are still hopeful and still believe we have done so much and this year, this is our first loss so we have done very well,” he added.

“It is not a situation where we look at it and criticise the boys. They have done very well to this level and of course how this match was organised and how it came about that we have to play here,” he further stated, hinting that the poor pitch conditions contributed to their loss to Tusker.

“Not just my team but the opponent as well. It is dangerous for the players and if you twist your leg, the field is so bumpy and not healthy for the boys.”

Gor Mahia have three tricky matches coming up next which could define their season with a meeting with Bandari, followed up by the potential title decider against Leopards before facing outgoing champions Kenya Police.
