Mauricio Pochettino’s men put behind them the nightmare against Newcastle United the previous weekend to return to winning ways.
Enzo Fernandez and Levi Colwill netted two goals in four minutes to give the hosts a comfortable lead before Brighton pulled one back two minutes to half time.
However, the Blues will end the half with ten men and looked set to let the three points slip after academy graduate, Gallagher, was red-carded just before the break.
The 23-year-old headed for early showers following two yellow card offences as Chelsea finished the game with 10 men.

After the break, Fernandez doubled Chelsea’s advantage with his second of the day and a third for the Blues.
But Joao Pedro’s late goal ensured a tense final minutes between the two teams.
Chelsea held on for the win and three points, with Gallagher taking to social media to apologise to his teammates and fans.
“So proud of the boys today, brilliant win,” he posted on Instagram. “Apologies for the red card and putting the boys in that position,” he added. “Support was class as always.
Despite the win, Chelsea remain 10th on the table with 19 points, but have closed the gap between them and their visitors, Brighton, who sit eighth, by three points.
