Charlton Athletic Coach Explains Collins Sichenje's Rise to Key Role Amid Injury Concerns
Charlton Athletic head coach Nathan Jones has provided an update on Reece Burke’s injury and also revealed how Collins Sichenje and Luke Berry are faring on after picking up knocks during the match against Wrexham A.F.C.
Charlton suffered a 1–0 defeat to Wrexham, with Collins Sichenje coming on in the 13th minute to replace Burke after the defender went down injured.
In the hotly contested match, Ollie Rathbone scored the only goal of the game, finding the net in the 30th minute.
Nathan Jones Heavily Relying on Collins Sichenje
Speaking ahead of their encounter against Birmingham, Nathan Jones said the contest against Wrexham A.F.C. was extremely demanding and physical, drawing comparisons to their previous clash with Swansea City A.F.C. because of how intense and combative it became at different stages.
The coach explained that the game required a lot of resilience from his players due to the aggressive nature of the contest and the challenges posed by the opposition.
Nathan Jones also spoke about the situation involving Reece Burke, noting that the defender has endured a particularly difficult period with several setbacks this season.
He added that the coaching and medical staff had taken every possible step to support the player and manage his condition, but acknowledged that the series of issues has been frustrating for both the player and the club.
“Yeah, look, it was reminiscent of the Swansea game where it was a bit of a war zone at times and I don't mean to be flippant with that. I'm using that metaphorically,” he told the club’s media.
“But it was just a tough game in terms of them. Reece has had a really frustrating one because he's picked up injuries he's never had before. We've done everything we could.”
Nathan Jones added that Reece Burke was not included in the squad for the match against West Bromwich Albion F.C. so that he could focus on training and be in better condition for the weekend fixture.
He said the staff were mindful of how regularly Collins Sichenje had been used after returning from limited pre-season preparation in Serbia before stepping into the demanding pace of the Championship.
Jones added that a series of injuries during recent matches created a chain reaction in team selection. After Lloyd Jones was forced off in midweek and Burke later picked up a problem, the coaching staff had little choice but to rely on Collins Sichenje again.
He noted that the situation also made things difficult for Beza Dvalishvili, who has not played many minutes recently despite training well and showing strong form in preparation.
The Charlton manager said the main frustration was losing several players at once, as it reduced the level of competition for places within the squad and limited the options available to the team.
“We didn't take him to West Brom, trained him so that he'd be ready for Saturday because we knew that they're playing Collins regularly after him coming back off the back of half a pre-season in Serbia and then coming into the energy and the intensity of a championship game,” he added.
“We knew it would be tough and it was just a knock-on effect. Lloyd came off in mid-week and we had to put Collins on. Berkey came off and then we had to put Collins on and then it's a knock-on effect. That's the thing. It was a tough game for Beza.
“Obviously, Beza hasn't played many minutes but has trained fully and been in excellent form. So it's just the frustration of losing a few players because it just takes away that little bit of competition.”
