McCarthy enjoys cult status among Pirates fans after his two incredible seasons at the club between 2011 and 2013 when he won three trophies, the MTN8, Telkom Knockout and the Premier Soccer League, the last league title for the club.

The South African legend came up with many clutch moments at Pirates, scoring key goals that drove them to glory but according to him, that was all business as his heart has always been on their arch rivals Chiefs.

“I always wanted to play for Man United. So Kaizer Chiefs and Manchester United, those are my two teams,” McCarthy said during the launch of his biography BENNI.

“I was fortunate enough to win a treble with Orlando Pirates but it is never going to change me. I love Pirates and I love my time at the club but once I get home, I am love and peace all the way.”

With Chiefs in the market for a new coach at the end of the season, McCarthy put his hat in the ring, expressing a desire to manage the Soweto giants one day.

“So Chiefs and Pirates was my heart and I always wanted to play for both of those clubs or coach both clubs,” he added.

Missed Chance to Play for Man United

“I managed to fulfill one dream, I wasn’t fortunate enough to play for Man United, I had the opportunity to sign for them but my club Blackburn did not allow me to leave,” said McCarthy, also a Manchester United fan.

“So I never had a chance to play for them then I got asked to come in as one of the coaches at the team and we won Carabao Cup and FA Cup, we beat Man City [in the final] when they were the best team I have ever seen in the last decade and we managed to make them look average in that FA Cup final,” the former Ajax Amsterdam, Celta Vigo and FC Porto striker said on his time as United’s attacking coach during Erik ten Hag’s reign.

Chiefs and Pirates are South Africa’s two biggest clubs and their rivalry is so intense that McCarthy’s sentiments might not be taken lightly by those who follow the Buccaneers.
