CHAN 2024:Dennis Oliech on How Harambee Stars Can Learn From Chelsea's CWC Win to Lift Title
Former Harambee Stars captain Dennis Oliech believes Kenya can pull off a surprise at the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) by drawing inspiration from Chelsea’s unlikely Club World Cup (CWC) triumph.
Oliech, recently appointed as the official tournament ambassador, expressed optimism about Kenya’s chances, highlighting the importance of belief, discipline, and home support as key ingredients to success.

Oliech: A Huge Privilege to Be CHAN 2024 Ambassador
Speaking to Tata Sports, Oliech, who scored 34 goals for the national team—second only to legendary striker William ‘Chege’ Ouma—shared his excitement about being recognized for his contributions to Kenyan football.
“They named me brand ambassador maybe because of my track record—the history as top goal scorer—or maybe just because I’m Kenyan,” said Oliech. “I was disciplined. I captained the national team for 10 years, and I believe I’m one of the best candidates of this generation.”
Oliech, who made his national team debut at just 17 under Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee, praised the government and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for honouring former players.
“This is a way of appreciating legends. I hope I’ll also be considered as ambassador for AFCON in the future,” he added.
The 2024 CHAN tournament is being co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania—the first time it’s being held in East Africa. Oliech urged fans to fill the stadiums not just for Kenya’s matches but for the entire tournament.
“Fans should turn up in large numbers. CHAN is here, and you never know when we’ll host it again. Go enjoy yourselves.”
Oliech: Harambee Stars Could Become as Lucky as Chelsea
On Harambee Stars' prospects, Oliech referenced Chelsea’s underdog run at the Club World Cup, where they defeated PSG 3-0 against all odds to win the title.
“No one expected Chelsea to clinch the Club World Cup, but they did. Maybe for Harambee Stars, luck could also be on our side,” he said.
Oliech believes home advantage could count to Kenya’s favor during the upcoming tournament, with the side playing all their group A matches at Kasarani Stadium.
“We have home advantage now, and with discipline and determination, we could lift it!”
Kenya will face Angola in their second match on Thursday night from 7.00 PM, having beaten DR Congo 1-0 in their opening match last Sunday.
They will then face Morocco on Sunday, before playing Zambia in their final group stage game next week.
Kenya’s journey at CHAN 2024 continues, and with legends like Oliech rallying behind them, the Stars will be hoping to make history on home soil.
