Tanzanian marathon star Gabriel Geay has sent a clear message to his competitors ahead of the Berlin Marathon scheduled for Sunday, September 21.

Gabriel Geay, one of the most consistent marathoners, will face off against a strong field including London and Valencia Marathon champion Sabastian Sawe, and defending champion Milkesa Mengesha.

Other top contenders include a host of Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes with blistering personal bests, such as Haymanot Alew, Guye Adola, and Daniel Mateiko. Japan's Kengo Suzuki also adds to the depth of the field, with a national record of 2:04:56.

He has already declared himself as a "tough competitor" ahead of his encounter with a field stacked with elite talent.

Gabriel Geay, who holds the Tanzanian national record, spent about two months in Madunga, Tanzania, for an intensive two-month training camp.

"I’m here in Madunga for the training and preparation ahead of the Berlin Marathon. I have been here for at least two months as I get ready for Berlin. I can say that I’m ready to compete in Berlin, and I know I will meet strong athletes there, and I believe I’m one of them,” a confident Gabriel Geay said.

“I’ll go there ready for the race and I will do my best…I hope I get good results and clock and personal best time, that’s what I’m looking forward to."

Gabriel Geay's optimism is a bold statement, considering the calibre of the athletes he will be lining up against.

The men's elite field for the Berlin Marathon is arguably one of the strongest in recent memory, with a number of sub-2:05 runners looking to make their mark on the famously fast course.
