Benni McCarthy, Pitso Mosimane Face Major Competition for Top Job as Former Pirates Coach Enters Race
Former Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has publicly declared his ambition to lead the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, once current manager Hugo Broos concludes his tenure.
The Spanish tactician comes across as a competitor to Benni McCarthy, Helman Mkhalele, Pitso Mosimane, Gavin Hunt, and other top coaches who had been backed to replace Hugo Broos.
The Spanish tactician, who has enjoyed considerable success since joining the Soweto giants in 2022, believes his deep familiarity with local players and his commitment to youth development make him a strong candidate for the top job.
Jose Riveiro's comments have ignited discussions about the future leadership of the national team, especially with Bafana Bafana on a high after a strong World Cup qualifier campaign and a promising start to their 2025 AFCON ambitions and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign under Hugo Broos.
Why Jose Riveiro Believes He is Better Than Benni McCarthy and Co
In a recent interview, Jose Riveiro made his aspirations clear, stating he would be ready to step in when the time comes.
"I am available for the Bafana Bafana job after Hugo Broos leaves," he confirmed as quoted by Central News.
"To coach a national team, you also need to help with the development of young players in the country. I would definitely take that job. I already know almost all the players in the team."
Despite his ambition, Jose Riveiro was quick to emphasise the importance of supporting the current setup. He urged the football community to rally behind Hugo Broos and the players as they prepare for major tournaments.
"South Africa has a national team coach right now… We have to enjoy the moment. South Africa is doing so well in terms of football. We are just about to go to AFCON, a World Cup on the horizon as well," he added.
"Let’s give all the support to Hugo and his people and these players, because they are on the verge to do something great for South African football. And let’s see what happens after that."
Jose Riveiro: A Proven Track Record in South Africa
Since he arrived from Finnish club Inter Turku in June 2022, Jose Riveiro, 49, has established himself as one of the Premier Soccer League's most effective coaches.
He has guided Orlando Pirates to consecutive Nedbank Cup and MTN8 titles, building a reputation for tactical intelligence and a commitment to nurturing young talent, such as the breakout star Relebohile Mofokeng.
His hands-on experience with several Bafana Bafana regulars at Orlando Pirates, including Nkosinathi Sibisi, Thabiso Monyane, and Evidence Makgopa, provides him with an intimate understanding of the national player pool.
Meanwhile, the current Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos, 73, has been widely praised for revitalising the national team since his appointment in May 2021.
He led the squad to a third-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, their best result in over two decades, and has them well-positioned in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group. Broos' contract runs until after the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
