The Harambee Stars head coach began his international club journey in 1997, moving from South Africa’s Seven Stars to Dutch giants Ajax.

He explained that the experience within his family made him extremely cautious in dealing with agents, a mindset that helped him secure a record move to Spain’s Celta Vigo in 1999.

Benni McCarthy went on to enjoy a successful European career, winning the UEFA Champions League with Porto.

Benni McCarthy: I Experienced It Firsthand

Speaking on the ‘What’s the Difference? A Woolies Food Podcast’, Benni McCarthy said that his understanding of the risks surrounding football intermediaries was shaped by a painful experience his older brother went through while on the verge of a major move to Europe, where the opportunity eventually collapsed due to deception.

The former Manchester United attacking coach explained that the incident had a deep emotional impact within the family, leaving his brother disheartened and temporarily discouraging him from continuing with the game.

Benni McCarthy added that witnessing this situation while he was still developing as a player made him extremely cautious and alert when dealing with people offering career opportunities.

He further noted that the experience forced him to adopt a highly guarded and streetwise approach, ensuring he scrutinised every offer carefully to avoid repeating the same fate within his own career path.

“I experienced it firsthand because my older brother, he went through it. So you kind of went through that experience as a family. He was meant to go to Belgium, and he was going to sign for a big team, like FC Bruges, and then he got scammed, like right out of it and came back,” Benni McCarthy shared.

“It kind of left him devastated, you know and not wanting to play football, and I was just coming up through. When that happened to him, then you don't want to make the same mistake as your brother.

“So, when it came to me, I was very wary, and I was streetwise. I was letting my thug instinct, and it's like these scouts, they better not come here. You come here, lay your papers on the table, but you'll be seeing the pangas and that all sitting here.”
