During his two-year tenure, the South African legend was credited with revitalising the form of key forwards and helped the club secure both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

After his contract at Old Trafford concluded in June 2024, Benni McCarthy transitioned to international management and was appointed head coach of Harambee Stars in March 2025.

Benni McCarthy on His Time at Manchester United

In an interview with What’s the Difference? A Woolies Food Podcast, the Bafana Bafana legend reflected on the pressures of working at Manchester United.

He suggested that the role can be extremely demanding and can take a visible toll on anyone involved due to the intensity and constant scrutiny that comes with the job.

Benni McCarthy noted that the environment at Manchester United is one where emotional highs and lows are magnified significantly, explaining that success brings immense global attention and celebration, while periods of poor results attract heavy criticism and pressure that can feel overwhelming.

McCarthy added that the contrast between winning and losing at such a high-profile institution is striking, pointing out that achievements tend to bring a sense of pride and dominance, while setbacks often force those involved into a more subdued and difficult position, highlighting the unforgiving nature of elite football management.

“You see, hair loss, grey hair, if you want to age before your time, I mean, in a heartbeat, go work for Man United. That's why when there's success, the world stands still when it comes to Man United, and it is amazing. It's just like peacock boom feathers are when you are winning, when you're losing, hey, you must crawl,” Benni McCarthy said.

Meanwhile, in his new role as head coach with the Kenya national football team, Benni McCarthy has made impressive strides, including a quarterfinal finish in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and competitive displays in the FIFA Series.

However, Benn McCarthy has recently hinted at a potential return to club football, expressing a desire for the daily interaction with players and being on the pitch frequently, something that the international calendar cannot provide.
