Benni McCarthy Continues His Dalliance With South African Giants - ‘I Would Choose Chiefs Over Pirates’
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has once again insisted that Kaizer Chiefs remains his ultimate dream when it comes to coaching a club in South Africa.
McCarthy, a legend of Chiefs’ bitter rivals Orlando Pirates, risked the wrath of Buccaneers supporters last week, when he admitted that Amakhosi have always been the team he supported even if he played for and enjoyed success with their No.1 enemy.
He also expressed a desire to coach Chiefs and he has maintained the same in a separate interview, insisting that if both Pirates and the Glamour Boys approached him, he would choose the latter despite his legendary status at the former.
“It’s my childhood team that I support, so of course, as a player, I would have jumped if it were that situation,” McCarthy told iDiski Times.
McCarthy Puts Chiefs Ahead of Pirates
“If the chairman [Irvin Khoza] asked me to join Pirates, and Chiefs came to me. I would go to Chiefs because it’s my team I supported, you understand?”
However, the Harambee Stars boss is not so desperate for the Chiefs job and accepts that he might be bypassed again as it has happened a number of times before.
“But, I’m in a situation where if they don’t want you, I don’t force anything upon anyone. So, I won’t avail myself for an interview or anything,” he went on.
“But if they think that I’m the right fit, or something like that, of course, we’re there to have those discussions. But, thus far, nothing has come through.”
McCarthy has made it clear that he intends to return to club football management immediately after his stint with Kenya with his contract running until the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
