Kaizer Chiefs Boss Responds to Benni McCarthy Over interest in Coaching Job
Kaizer Chiefs’ Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr has commented on sentiments made by Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy about wanting to coach the club.
McCarthy revealed earlier this week that he is a Chiefs fan and would love to coach the club one day despite his links to bitter rivals Orlando Pirates, who he played for and enjoyed success with.
The Harambee Stars boss is not the only man who has been linked to the club with veteran coach Pitso Mosimane also touted as a potential target given Chiefs are struggling on the pitch while co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef have not covered themselves in glory as their contracts run out at the end of the season.
Kaizer Motaung Jr on McCarthy and Mosimane
“You’re mentioning two top individuals who’ve achieved tremendous things in their careers,” Motaung told South African broadcaster Robert Marawa on his Marawa Sports Worldwide show as per Afrik-Foot. “It would be unfair of me to sit here and talk about coaches when we have coaches within the team.”
“We have our immediate mandate and responsibility to restore the pride and the hurt that’s been happening to the nation and to the team,” he further stated.
Without confirming whether McCarthy or Mosimane will be in the running for the highly-coveted job, Motaung expressed pride that such legendary figures are being linked to his club.
“I can’t sit here and talk about individuals. It’s not professional,” he added. “I don’t think it’s the right thing to do. I have a lot of respect for both of those gentlemen; they’ve achieved a lot through their playing days and as coaches. It’s always an honour to be associated with people like that.”
Kaizer Chiefs Boss Wants Experienced Coach
However, he remains keen on ensuring the club gets the best-in-class coach but whether that includes McCarthy or Mosimane, who has declared his interest in the Bafana Bafana job, remains to be seen.
“Chiefs are a big team. We want the best coaches. The most experienced, the highest quality. That’s exactly what we want. That’s the direction we see ourselves. When we sat down and presented our 2030 plan,” Motaung further stated.
“The continent is very important to us. So in terms of our strategy, continental football is a must. So we want to be on that stage. We want the calibre of players, personnel, analysts, and coaches who can take us to that stage. We want to associate ourselves with the best of the best.”
