Fermin Lopez impresses for Barcelona

Lopez caught the eye with Barcelona in pre-season after scoring a sensational goal in a friendly against Real Madrid and has grown as the season has progressed, taking advantage of the club’s injury struggles to become an important part of the first team.

The young midfielder spent last season on loan at Linares in the Spanish third division but has fit seamlessly into the Barcelona first team when he has been called upon, becoming a favourite of manager Xavi.

Lopez has already played nine matches out of a possible 13 for Barcelona, and has started the club’s last four matches in all competitions, attracting the attention of Spain manager Luis de la Fuente.

Fermin Lopez in line for Spain call up

With Barcelona midfielders Pedri and Gavi struggling for fitness ahead of Spain’s November fixtures against Cyprus and Georgia, Spain might require new blood in midfield, with Lopez being one of the prime candidates.

According to Spanish outlet Relevo, La Roja manager de la Fuente is considering handing the 20-year-old La Masia graduate his first call-up to the senior Spanish national team, despite the midfielder never representing any of Spain’s youth teams.

Lopez has scored twice for Barcelona and provided one assist for his side, and will be hoping to carry that form into the Spanish national team if he gets a call-up.
