Austin Odhiambo Addresses Fans After Harambee Stars' FIFA Series Campaign: 'We Are Also Not Happy'
Harambee Stars attacking midfielder Austin Odhiambo has admitted that the squad was disappointed with a third-place finish in the recently concluded FIFA Series.
The former Gor Mahia midfielder also expressed understanding of the fans' reaction, noting that supporters are justified in their frustration when the national team fails to secure victories.
Kenya began their FIFA Series campaign with a 1-1 draw against Estonia, a match they eventually lost 5-4 on penalties. However, they bounced back strongly in their final outing, securing a convincing 3-0 win over Grenada to clinch the bronze medal.
Austin Odhiambo: It's Okay Not to Be Happy
Speaking after their match against Grenada, the Nejmeh SC midfielder noted that he understood the disappointment among supporters following Harambee Stars' third-place finish in the FIFA Series.
He explained that expectations are naturally high given the team’s winning mentality. Austin Odhiambo indicated that the players themselves were also unsatisfied with the outcome, as they had aimed for a stronger finish in the tournament.
Austin Odhiambo further acknowledged that reactions from fans were justified, stressing that such emotions are part of the game when results fall short of what is hoped for. Odhiambo added that experiences like these are common in football and serve as part of the team’s ongoing growth and learning process.
“It’s okay not to be happy because they are used to winning, and we players are also not happy with the third position. It’s normal in football, and they have the right to be angry,” Austin Odhiambo said after the match.
Austin Odhiambo further stated that the match against Grenada was a positive experience for the team, highlighting the importance of unity and collective effort, especially after the setback in their opening fixture against Estonia, which made victory in the game essential.
He explained that contributing to goals for the national team is always a source of pride for him as an attacking player and expressed satisfaction with the result.
Odhiambo further noted that the squad is gradually improving through increased cohesion and participation from different players, adding that the ongoing process of integration within the team was building a stronger foundation.
“The game has been great. We knew that we needed to work as a team and knew that this was a very important game for us because we had lost the first match, so we had to win this one for our country,” Austin Odhiambo said.
“It’s always my pleasure to score for the national team, and as a forward, it’s always a good thing, and I’m happy. Going forward, it’s good for our country because everyone is getting involved, and we are trying to blend, and I’m sure in the future we shall have a formidable national team.”
