Nairobi United Star Sends Benni McCarthy AFCON 2027 Reminder After Bagging Monthly Award
Nairobi United midfielder Kevin Wangaya seems to be knocking on the door of Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy after a string of impressive performances that have earned him a monthly award.
Wangaya, who was one of the stars for Kenya during the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, has been crowned SportPesa Premier League Player of the Month for April after six goal contributions for Naibois last month.
The 20-year-old opened the scoring in three matches against Mathare United, Posta Rangers, and Mara Sugar while his two assists against Murang’a Seal saw the team rally from a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2 in one of the games of the season.
After three goals and as many assists in five matches, Wangaya is keen to maintain the top form and catch the eye of McCarthy ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Wangaya’s Hard Work Paying Off
“I’m really honoured to win this award,” said Wangaya, the second youngest player to bag the award after Kariobangi Sharks’ 17-year-old teen sensation Humphrey Aroko, who was feted in February.
“Seeing Aroko win it earlier in the season was a big motivation - it showed what’s possible. I’ve just stayed focused, worked hard, and I’m happy to see it paying off.”
Wangaya, who won the award ahead of Police FC goalkeeper Daniel Ogembo, who recorded four clean sheets, and Naibois teammate Michael Karamor, who netted five goals in April, explained why he has a tendency of scoring the opening goals.
“I just try to be ready from the first whistle,” Wangaya further stated. “If we start strong, the whole team grows into the game. But more importantly, we’re fighting for results, and every contribution counts.”
Wangaya’s monthly accolade came with Ksh50,000 and a customised trophy from league sponsors SportPesa.
