AFC Leopards Boss Stokes Up the Fire with Jibe at Gor Mahia Over Nyayo Stadium Use
AFC Leopards coach Fred Ambani has added spice to his team’s title fight with Gor Mahia after claiming K’Ogalo are invading their home ground.
Ambani watched his team turn on the style at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday when they thrashed Shabana FC 5-1 in an FKF Premier League clash to cut Gor Mahia’s lead from nine to six points.
Ingwe looked inspired and well-motivated as they played at home, taking a 2-0 lead in the first half, before adding three more in the second although an incident of fan unrest nearly halted the match.
‘Everyone Should Play at their Home’
After the match, Ambani lauded his players for a job well done but also highlighted how Nyayo has turned into a fortress for his team, explaining why Ingwe find their mojo when playing at the venue.
“The surface is good and the players always know Nyayo Stadium is their home ground,” Ambani told the media on why Leopards turn on the style at Nyayo.
“For many years, it is known that AFC Leopards’ home ground is Nyayo, just that recently, some people have started mixing it up here. But this is Leopards’ home ground and Gor Mahia’s is Kasarani. So, everyone should play at their grounds,” added the Leopards boss.
Why Gor Mahia are ‘Homeless’
Ambani’s sentiment was a thinly veiled dig at Gor Mahia, who have played their last two league games at Nyayo. K’Ogalo also hosted Ingwe in the Mashemeji Derby at Nyayo Stadium last December.
That statement is likely set to ignite the rivalry between the two sides further although K’Ogalo are ‘homeless’ somewhat at the moment after Kasarani Stadium was closed for renovations designed to get it in shape for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Leopards will also have to find an alternative home soon as Nyayo is among venues set to be closed for AFCON 2027 renovations but Ambani will hope that his side will have picked up as many wins as possible by the time that happens.
