AFC Leopards Show Shabana Who is Boss With Five-Star Performance in Ill-Tempered Clash to Close in on Gor Mahia
AFC Leopards secured a decisive 5-1 victory over Shabana on Sunday evening at Nyayo Stadium, keeping their hopes alive in the 2025-26 Kenya Premier League title race.
The win helps them stay in touch with league leaders Gor Mahia.
The match was overshadowed by a significant disruption in the second half when police deployed teargas in the stands, causing a temporary halt as spectators fled for safety.
Before the interruption, Leopards had established a 2-1 lead. Samuel Semo and Tyson Otieno found the net in the first half to put Fred Ambani’s side ahead.
Chaos as Leopards Win Big
Shabana managed to reduce the deficit in the 61st minute through a goal from Wycliffe Awiko. However, their comeback hopes were short-lived as Samuel Ssenyonjo restored Leopards' two-goal cushion just seven minutes later, making it 3-1.
Shortly after, chaos erupted as teargas filled the stadium, forcing the referee to suspend play while the situation was brought under control.
When the match resumed, Ingwe quickly reasserted their dominance. Kayci Odhiambo unleashed a powerful strike in the 70th minute to extend the lead to 4-1. Ssenyonjo then completed his brace four minutes later, sealing the comprehensive 5-1 win.
This victory moves Leopards to within six points of Gor Mahia, who currently top the league standings with 46 points. Despite the heavy defeat, Shabana remains in third place with 40 points.
