RUGBY Mwanja counting on KCB’s depth to lead them to Enterprise Cup glory against Kabras

The bankers will be without six key players for Saturday’s final against Kabras but their forwards coach have full trust in those around

KCB RFC assistant coach Dennis Mwanja believes the Enterprise Cup final presents his side with an opportunity to test just how good their squad is.

The Bankers take on holders Kabras Sugar at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds on Saturday, in what will be a repeat of last season’s final, but both sides will be without key players who are on international duty with Kenya Simbas for the Currie Cup.

Thomas Okidia, Griffin Musila, Samuel Asati, Elvis Olukuti, Peter Kilonzo and Brian Wahinya are the first-team absentees from Saturday’s crunch match but Mwanja is unfazed as he feels it is an opportunity for those around to assert their authority and get the attention of the technical bench for future assignments.

“At KCB, we pride ourselves in giving opportunities to every player that walks in and proves themselves,” Mwanja told KRU Media.

“Throughout the season, we have had an opportunity to field any player but now that the players have been taken to the national team, those who are available and good enough will step up to the plate and play.

“It is an exciting time, it is time to show our depth. We have the players and we are looking at the future. We are looming at building for the upcoming assignments. It is a great time and we are excited about it.”

KCB have been the undisputed kings of the Enterprise Cup in the last decade, winning five titles over that period, including four straight from 2017 to 2021, but have seen Kabras claim the last two crowns.

The Kakamega-based side won last year’s final 9-6 in a tight encounter that did not witness any try and Saturday’s final will likely be close, given the form of both teams.
