Shujaa stars will be smiling to the bank after the Sports Ministry rewarded their promotion back to the World Sevens Series with handsome cash prizes.

Kenya Sevens players and members of their coaching staff will each pocket Ksh300,000 following their return to the World Sevens Series.

Shujaa were hosted to dinner by the Sports Ministry and the National Olympics Committee of Kenya on Wednesday night after which the squad and technical bench was rewarded with Ksh5.7 million to be distributed equally amongst themselves.

“We recognise the value of motivation thus the government is rewarding the team with Ksh5.7 million. This cannot quantify the sacrifices made by the team, but it is a token of appreciation and motivation to say, it can only get better in Olympics,” said Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba.

"The success of these team is a result of great effort behind the scenes. I stand here as a proud and grateful CS for Sports for everyone's input. I cannot thank enough the fans who travelled all the way round the Challenger Series to support the team.”

Namwamba also revealed that local and international allowances have been tripled for Kenyan sportsmen and women.

Kenya Sevens had suffered relegation last year when they lost in the playoff match to lose their core status for the first time in 19 years.

They, however, started plotting their way back in September when they shocked fancied South Africa to win the Africa Sevens in Zimbabwe and earn an Olympics ticket.

Kevin Wambua’s men would go on to win the Safari Sevens crown in Nairobi and this boosted their morale ahead of the 2024 Challenger Series which they needed to finish in the top four to be in contention for the promotion-relegation playoff.

They did just that, starting the series with cup victory in Dubai, followed by third place in Montevideo and managed fifth in Munich to earn a place in the playoff. At the playoff, they won two of their three group matches before beating Germany in the decisive match last Sunday to gain promotion.

Following their return to the World Series, Wambua’s men will now turn their focus to the Paris Olympics that start in under two months.
