The former Kenya Sevens player has revealed he may not have the energy to go again in the Enterprise Cup after Menengai Oilers were beaten by KCB in the Kenya Cup semis.

Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru was badly shattered by his side’s 21-12 loss to KCB which effectively ruled them out of returning to the final of the Kenya Cup for the first time since 2022.

Oilers had a glorious chance to win the match from the penalty spot just moments before Bob Muhati landed a sucker-punching converted try to give them the 21-12 win, leaving the Nakuru based outfit to have to wait another year for Kenya Cup glory.

Visibly frustrated following the loss, Weru was adamant his charges should have beaten KCB had they been more effective, especially considering they beat them 21-7 just earlier this month.

“I must congratulate KCB for the win. I just felt that the game was there for the taking and when  you play a Championship side, you have to seize your moment and make sure that you capitalise on them.

“I think at crucial times, we made critical errors that at the end of the day if you look back at how they scored, we could have avoided them.”

Weru appeared to suggest that the loss he described as hard to take could put him on the verge of taking a sabbatical from the game, considering the energy he had put into getting the team to try and win the competition this particular campaign.

"It is a learning process, a painful one . For me as a coach, I think that the amount of investment I have done on the team and amount of resources that have been pumped onto this campaign, I think we should have gotten a different result.”

Oilers have the chance to make amends in the Enterprise Cup, but Weu has appeared to suggest he may not even oversee them in the competition.

“It is tough for me because as a coach , I have really invested in this preparation. I don’t have the energy to go again and try. I just need to relax and see how I will go again.

“It has been a tough loss and again, I just need to recharge and find out how well to do that.”
