The Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP) and WRC Promoter confirmed the rally’s inclusion for three more seasons, extending its legacy as a mainstay of rallying history.

“This is very good news for the organisation and for all the mayors who trust us to bring this fantastic rally to the interior of the country, for the fans and for the economy,” said ACP President Carlos Barbosa.

“The confidence of WRC Promoter is also very important, so we are very glad to push for another three years of the rally.”

A Rally That Lives Through Its Fans

Since its debut as a founding round in the WRC's inaugural 1973 season, Rally de Portugal has carved out a reputation as one of the most demanding and iconic events on the calendar.

Though the rally took a brief break between 2002 and 2006, it returned stronger and more popular than ever, now headquartered in Matosinhos in Portugal’s northwest. With challenging gravel stages like Fafe and Arganil, the event continues to push drivers to their limits—and the fans love every moment of it.

“We only need to look around us here [in Fafe, on the Wolf Power Stage] to see what an important spectacle this is – sporting, promotional and spectator-wise. This is an important event for us. This is an important step for the WRC and for Portugal,” noted Simon Larkin, Senior Events Director of WRC Promoter.

The sea of fans that lines the stages year after year speaks volumes. Portugal’s unwavering passion for motorsport, coupled with its ability to deliver a smooth, thrilling event, makes it a no-brainer on the global rally calendar.

Leadership and Unity Drive Long-Term Success

The long-term success of Rally de Portugal goes far beyond dirt roads and dust clouds—it’s built on a solid foundation of collaboration and leadership. Larkin acknowledged the tireless efforts of ACP President Carlos Barbosa in uniting diverse stakeholders that make the event possible.

“It involves a lot of different stakeholders – municipalities and tourism bodies – that really support this event and make it what it is. President Barbosa does a great job bringing them together to create this great rally that everyone in the WRC loves.”

From drawing thousands of spectators to generating millions in local economic activity, Rally de Portugal is more than just a race—it is a national spectacle with global impact.

And with its future secured through 2028, fans can continue circling the date for one of the most electrifying stops on the WRC tour.

The gravel, the fans, the passion—Portugal delivers it all.
