Mashujaa Day: Crowning Moment for Four Harambee Stars Players and Key Official

Four Harambee Stars players and a key team official are among 31 sports personalities in line for major Head of State Commendations from President Ruto during Mashujaa Day.

As Kenyans mark Mashujaa Day, a day set aside to celebrate the country’s heroes, four Harambee Stars players will be among those getting recognised.

The 2025 Mashujaa Day celebrations will be held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County on Monday with President William Ruto set to lead the occasion and there are 31 sports personalities listed for various Head of State Commendations.

Among them are four Harambee Stars players and an official who are in line for the awards.

Defender Aboud Omar, goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, midfielder Alpha Onyango and striker Ryan Ogam are the players listed for the ward as well as Harambee Stars data analyst and team manager Nick Kimanthi.

Why are Harambee Stars Played Being Honoured?

The five are being recognised for their starring role during the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) when they helped Harambee Stars reach the quarter-final of the competition.

Omar was the captain of the side and led from the front with impressive performances as well as his leadership on and off the pitch while Omondi came up trumps with his key saves that kept the team in the competition, earning Man of the Match Award against Morocco.

Meanwhile, Onyango was a crucial cog in midfield and was named Man of the Match twice, while Ogam grabbed two match-winning goals against Morocco and Zambia in the group stages of the competition.

Kimanthi had a big role in helping coach Benni McCarthy by tracking the players’ performance details such as distance covered, speed, player load, impacts, work ratio and even heart rate, which contributed to the overall output on matchdays and in training.

Karate Legend Among Those To be Feted

He also informed the coach whether a player was ready to play 90 minutes or less and the strengths as well as weaknesses of the opponent.

The National Heroes Council listed the five among 31 sports personalities among them former CECAFA secretary general Nicholas Musonye, who was Local Organszing Committee chairman during CHAN 2024, Kenya U17 girls coach Mildred Cheche, who guided the team to the 2024 U17 World Cup.

Karate legend Maurice Aloo is also among those listed and he is set to be recognised for his significant contributions to Kenyan Karate as he is credited with pioneering the East Africa Gojukai Karate Championship and establishing referee and judge courses to professionalise the sport.
