The Gambia coach gave Benni McCarthy full backing but kept fans in suspense over his own coaching ambitions with Harambee Stars.

The Gambia coach, Johnathan McKinstry, has shared his honest opinion on Benni McCarthy, as he remained vague on whether he would love to coach Harambee Stars in the near future.

Johnathan McKinstry was speaking after the Scorpions defeated Harambee Stars 3-1 in their second leg of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Friday evening.

In the first leg of the qualifiers, Harambee Stars held The Gambia to a 3-3 draw, in a match played at the Alassane Ouattara Ebimpé Olympic Stadium in the Ivory Coast.

Johnathan McKinstry was intending to make a statement in the second leg, and he achieved his target, but noted that despite the win, he believes Benni McCarthy has more to give to Harambee Stars.

According to Johnathan McKinstry, Harambee Stars are in the right hands under the tutelage of Benni McCarthy.

The former Gor Mahia coach revealed that Benni McCarthy has all it takes to propel Harambee Stars forward, insisting that the Football Kenya Federation and stakeholders should give the South African time to make a difference.

Johnathan McKinstry went down memory lane on his time at Gor Mahia, noting that things were different and one could clearly note that Harambee Stars were headed in the wrong direction.

However, at the moment, Johnathan McKinstry believes that the former Manchester United attacking coach is what Kenya needs.

“Kenya has exactly the right coach Harambee Stars need right now. I was without overall ground, when you go back to some of the interviews I did here, I was a little bit outspoken about some things,” Johnathan McKinstry said.

“I think I don’t need to refresh some of my thoughts from previous years. I think you absolutely got the right coach here. You have to get behind him. I think he is hugely experienced.

“With the progress the team’s making, I think Kenya are going to go a long way. Stick with the current guy for a long time, for as long as you can, that’s the suggestion.”

With his response, Johnathan McKinstry made it clear he has no interest in coaching Harambee Stars at the moment.

Instead, he has backed Benni McCarthy as the right man for the job, urging Kenya to give him time and full support.
