Why Are Kaizer Chiefs Struggling? Top Coach Gives Blunt Assessment

The Amakhosi's new, large squad has quality but still lacks the right 'combinations' to succeed, says a top SA mentor.

Durban City FC coach Gavin Hunt has offered a candid assessment of Kaizer Chiefs’ current standing, zeroing in on one key element he believes the Soweto giants still lack.

Despite a massive overhaul and a squad brimming with new talent, the veteran mentor suggests Amakhosi are still searching for cohesion and the right formula.

Chiefs have navigated the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season with mixed results. A strong start that included three wins and a draw in their first five matches gave way to a concerning slump, as the Glamour Boys suddenly went four consecutive matches without registering a single win.

A response eventually materialized in the form of two crucial, consecutive wins in the league: a narrow 1-0 victory over Hunt's Durban City FC and, more recently, a swaggering 4-1 victory against Orbit College FC. This recovery follows one of the busiest transfer windows in the club's recent history.

Speaking on the Smash Sports podcast ahead of their clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium last Friday, the former Amakhosi mentor argued that while the quality is present, the squad may be too large, hindering the discovery of effective partnerships.

“They have a good squad of players, they are obviously good, maybe too big a squad there,” Hunt said.

“They just haven’t found their [combinations], he fits better there, and he fits better there. Sometimes it happens at a big club like that."

Hunt, who managed the Soweto giants during the 2020/21 season, expanded on the issue, comparing the situation to that of their arch-rivals, Orlando Pirates, who also boast a large roster.

“A lot of these squads, I mean, Orlando Pirates, have squads of 30, 40 players. Everyone is just as good as the next one. Who plays and who gets left out?”

The Durban City coach believes Chiefs are grappling with the same headache following their recruitment drive.

“I think Chiefs have the same problem. A lot of players have come in. There is a big turnover," Hunt explained.

He also noted the external pressure that fuels this cycle, stating: "The supporter obviously does not care about that. Every season, they just want to see who they are signing. Maybe there is no need for signings in a certain season.”

The "big turnover" Hunt referred to has seen Amakhosi bring in new faces across every department. The defence was bolstered by Thabo Monyane and Paseka Mako, both arriving from Orlando Pirates, along with left-back Nkanyiso Shinga.

In midfield, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Lebohang Maboe have joined the fold to add creativity and steel. The attack, meanwhile, was completely revamped with the high-profile additions of Khanyisa Mayo, Flavio Silva, Etiosa Ighodaro, and Asanele Velebayi.

Having finally broken their winless streak, Amakhosi will be desperate to prove they are finding the combinations Hunt highlighted. Their next test is an away fixture on Saturday, 22 November, against Magesi FC at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.
