Former Chelsea forward Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has poured cold water on claims that Manchester United have been better this season.

Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has questioned claims that Manchester United have improved under Ruben Amorim, despite the club's recent positive run of results.

Amorim took the helm at Old Trafford on November 1 last year, with his tenure getting off to a rocky start. The team finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League, their lowest-ever ranking in the competition's history, prompting an apology from the Portuguese manager to the supporters.

The season also ended in heartbreak with a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, which cost the club a place in the Champions League. This season began with more frustration after a surprising Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Grimsby in August, intensifying scrutiny on Amorim's leadership.

Why is Hasselbaink Unconvinced by Man United?

However, Manchester United's league form has seen a significant upturn recently. The team entered the international break on a five-match unbeaten streak, which included a notable 2-1 win against Liverpool at Anfield and a dramatic last-gasp draw with Tottenham. This run has propelled United to seventh in the table, just two points behind third-placed Chelsea.

Despite these results, Hasselbaink remains unconvinced. Speaking on Sky Sports, the former forward, who has managed clubs like QPR and Burton Albion, argued that Amorim still has a mountain to climb.

"I don’t think they have improved, I’m sorry," Hasselbaink stated as quoted by the Dailymail. "Where, where have they improved? They have not scored more goals, they have not had less goals against, they have not won any trophies."

He also downplayed their European final appearance last season, adding, "Yes, they have been in a final in Europe but lost against a poor side; Tottenham were a poor side last year. He has got a lot of work to do, a lot of work."

United’s Results Have Recorded Key Wins this Term

Statistically, United's Premier League performance has been better this season. After a worrying record of seven wins, six draws, and 14 losses in 27 league games last term, Amorim's side has secured five wins, three draws, and three losses so far this campaign.

While two of those defeats were against top-two sides Arsenal and Manchester City, impressive victories over Chelsea and Liverpool have been significant achievements.

Amorim himself has been cautious about the team's recent form, insisting that there are still underlying issues to address following the 2-2 draw with Spurs.

"We have a lot of problems; we are just in the beginning," the 40-year-old manager said after the match. "I know that sometimes the results show to people that we are improving."
