Benni McCarthy: Former Man United Attacking Coach Gives his Verdict on Benjamin Sesko
Kenya coach Benni McCarthy feels Manchester United would have reaped handsome dividends had they had both Rasmus Hojlund and Benjamin Sesko at the club.
Hojlund was shipped out on loan to Napoli after two underwhelming years at United, when he managed 26 goals and six assists in 95 games, with Sesko signed for €76.5 million from RB Leipzig to become United’s main striker.
The Danish forward is enjoying a revival in Italy with four goals in nine games while Sesko has so far managed two and an assist in 10 Premier League games but former United attacking coach McCarthy feels the two would have been a great asset to the club.
“I think Sesko and Rasmus Hojlund would have been a good pair, to have two top strikers at the club. Both young, of course, both foreign, both from outside England,” McCarthy told Best Betting Sites.
McCarthy Would Have Loved Sesko and Hojlund Together
“They have to adapt. They need to adapt to their new environment. But I think once they both get going, it could have been a really good pair for United like they had back in the day.
“They had Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Teddy Sheringham. They had four really top-class strikers and you just have to try and make it work. And I think United would have had a similar situation if they had kept Rasmus Hojlund.”
McCarthy, however, feels it was important that both players get regular playing time and hopes Hojlund can grab his opportunities at Napoli and make it hard for United to sell him.
“But I understand, players want to play,” the Harambee Stars coach further said. “When you make that bold move to come to United, you don’t want to be sharing the load with somebody else or sitting on the bench while the other one plays and vice versa.”
“So, yeah, tough decisions, but the club ended up offloading Rasmus Hojlund, and he seems to be very happy where he is, and he’s playing and he’s gaining valuable experience and he’s scoring goals,” he said.
What Does Kenya Coach Make of Slovenia Striker?
“It’s good for his confidence and he’s still a United player. At the end of the day, maybe he’ll come back from this loan and then hopefully he’ll be ready then to kick on for United. And then he and Benjamin Sesko can work together.”
Commenting on Sesko’s start to life at Old Trafford, McCarthy says the Slovenia international will need to find his feet quickly but rates him highly.
“For Sesko, he’ll have to adapt to the way of playing, and he’s already scored two goals now in the last three games,” he added. “So once he can hit the ground running, United will have really good pedigree up front and they are relatively young footballers.”
Sesko has a chance to showcase his skills further as United play away to Tottenham Hotspur in the early Premier League kick off on Saturday.
