Rising Stars coach Anthony Akhulia has explained what cost them during the group stages at the 2025 U20 AFCON.
Rising Stars assistant coach Anthony Akhulia has explained what Kenya must do to become a mainstay at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) stage following their memorable campaign that saw them eliminated at the group stage level.
Kenya had qualified for the tournament for just the first time in their history, and were placed in a tough group that included Nigeria, Tunisia and Morocco.
Kenya lost the first match 3-2, in a game where defensive mistakes cost them dear, before squandering a goal advantage to lost 3-1 to Tunisia in their second match. They were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Nigeria in their last match of the tournament.

Benni McCarthy’s Harambee Stars Get High Praise from Nigeria Coach as He Identifies Where Rising Stars Failed
Nigeria Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has opened up on what has impressed him about Harambee Stars while giving Rising Stars tips on how to improve.
The side jetted back into the country on Sunday following the tournament. Akhulia, who has done alot of media duties in place of Salim Babu, explained exactly what went wrong, saying that, although the side may have underperformed, Kenyans need to cut them some slack.
"I know much was expected from us. At some point I felt like maybe we let Kenyans down," he admitted.
"But again, I realized that it was just our first tournament and we learned a lot of things."
He added, "I feel like those things, if we put into practice, we must first conquer the region. In each and every tournament that happens, we must be there first. We start by us conquering this region of CECAFA, and then in our next AFCON, now we must reach the semi-finals."
Leading up to the tournament, Kenya only took part in one friendly match against a high quality international opposition, playing against Ghana, with the game ending in a 2-2 draw.

They had taken part in multiple friendlies against local Kenyan clubs. Initially, the plan was to travel to Morocco to prepare for the tournament, and play a friendly against the hosts, but after the groups were re-seeded, it turned out to be impossible.
Looking ahead, he emphasized the importance of better preparation through high-quality friendlies.
"I feel like if we can have more friendlies against teams like Morocco, Egypt, South Africa — the teams that have been there each and every time — they’ll give us an edge.
“Because if you look at the friendly we played against Ghana, it showed us how maybe the West African teams were playing. That’s why we handled Nigeria the way we handled."
"I feel like if we would have gotten a friendly against maybe a North African side, maybe it would have given us an edge against Morocco."
He closed by expressing optimism about the team’s future.
"All said and done, I think this is a great team. The federation and the government only need to know how to keep them together.
