Long before scoring 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting CP over two seasons, Viktor Gyokeres honed his skills at St. Pauli in the German second division during the 2019/20 season. While he scored just seven times in 28 appearances, his work ethic stood out.

Former St. Pauli assistant manager Andre Trulsen told The Sun: “I hadn’t heard of Viktor when we signed him on loan from Brighton. We were a Bundesliga 2 club.

“But he joined us and I was very impressed. He was very physical and knew how to use his attributes. He was eager to improve and worked hard to earn more playing time.

“Before the winter break, he worked tirelessly to adapt to German football and our system. His efforts paid off, and he played more in the second half of the season.

“Viktor definitely helped us avoid relegation. He gave everything. I saw his potential, but as is often the case in football, you couldn’t be certain he’d become so successful.”

Trulsen recalled having to tell Viktor Gyokeres to leave the training pitch on multiple occasions because of his relentless desire to improve.

He expressed his pleasure at Gyokeres' success and hopes he can make a significant contribution to Arsenal. At Arsenal, Viktor Gyokeres will wear the No. 14 shirt for Arsenal, a number made famous by club legend Thierry Henry.

However, he seems unlikely to be intimidated, given his dedicated approach to his career. Former Arsenal academy product and current Coventry midfielder Ben Sheaf, who played alongside Viktor Gyokeres for two and a half years, praised his former teammate's drive.

"When he arrived on loan from Brighton, he was in and out of the team but showed glimpses of quality," Sheaf told The Athletic. "He signed permanently after the initial loan, returning stronger and even more physical."

Sheaf also recounted a training ground incident that highlighted Viktor Gyokeres' physicality, where he pinned and rolled him, and there was nothing he could do about it.
