Nigerian football icon Sunday Oliseh expressed his concern over the fortunes of his former club Ajax this season.

Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has opened up about the struggles of Eredivisie side Ajax, fearing that the four-time Champions League winner could get relegated.

The 49-year-old played for Ajax for two seasons, from the 1997/98 season until the summer of 1999, when he moved to Juventus in the Serie A.

Ajax struggles

The Son of Gods are currently going through a crisis and are currently under their third manager since the departure of Erik Ten Hag to Manchester United.

The Dutch team enjoyed a renaissance under the former Ultrech boss, winning three league titles and reaching the Champions League semi-final.

However, since he left, Ajax have seen a downturn, finishing 23 points behind champions Feyenoord last season. This season has been worse for them, and they currently find themselves placed 17th on the league table, a relegation spot in the Eredivisie.

What Oliseh said

The 1996 Olympic gold medalist won one league title and two Dutch Cups with Ajax in his two seasons at the club.

He is concerned about the club’s current struggles, taking to social media to express his disappointment.

“It’s been quite sad watching an extremely disappointing Ajax’s first half today,” Oliseh tweeted.

“I have never seen my ex-club this poor! At this rate, Ajax just might get relegated, as strange as it sounds. Lots of work needs to be done on all sections.”

Meanwhile, Ajax were forced to abandon a second consecutive match in the Eredivisie after their fixture against RKC Waalwijk was abruptly halted due to an injury to their opponent’s goalkeeper, Etienne Vaessen, who suffered a nasty head injury.
