Talanta Sports City is set to be used as a venue to co-host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Talanta Stadium, one of the flagship projects under Kenya’s sports infrastructure upgrade as the country prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is expected to create numerous jobs once it becomes fully operational, according to turf management experts.

The stadium is located at the Jamhuri Sports Grounds alongside Ngong Road in Nairobi, with the 60,000 seater arena set to host the final of the continental showpiece.

The facility, which officially began being built in March 2024,  will feature a main pitch supported by three training grounds outside, which will serve as training grounds during the tournament, as well as pitches for future league use.

Now, grass agronomist Moses Kivusi, who played a key role in helping all playing surfaces used for the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) which Kenya also co-hosted alongside Tanzania and Uganda, will require a dedicated workforce for its upkeep.

“If you are well facilitated with equipment, you need about seven people on a daily basis to maintain the pitches, plus some supplemental labour,” Kivusi explained on the Iko Nini Podcast.

“But if you don’t have the proper equipment and rely on manual work, you will need even more people to handle the pitches.”

How Talanta Stadium Could Transform the Economy

Beyond pitch maintenance, the stadium will also open opportunities in cleaning, security systems management, and general facility operations — roles that will collectively boost employment in the area.

During construction, over 3,300 workers have already been engaged — a figure that demonstrates the scale of the project and its potential employment ripple effect. F

Once functional, Talanta will be used for several functions apart from just football matches. Its use is envisioned to include concerts, public events, and national celebrations.

It has also been earmarked by Kenya Rugby Union as a ground the union could use as a venue with their intention being to bid to co-host one leg of the restructured HSBC 7s World Rugby Series.

This versatile role means the stadium will require a diverse team to maintain turf health after heavy use, service utility systems, ensure security protocols, manage crowd flow, and keep all ancillary operations running smoothly.
