Shikalo unfortunately fumbled the ball into his own net after failing to handle a tame shot by Mike Oduor.

Kakamega Homeboyz keeper Farouk Shikalo had a moment to forget as he gifted Mike Oduor of Tusker the winning goal as the Brewers closed the gap on Gor Mahia to just two points in the FKF PL title race, beating them 1-0 in a league match played at the Ruaraka Grounds on Sunday.

The game was fairly even between both sides in the opening 20 minutes with no one creating any real inroads in each other’s opposition half and nothing substantially momentous taking place.

In the 18th minute, A moment of confusion nearly gave Tusker a scare. Enock Agwanda appeared to go down in the box after a collision with Thomas Teka following a cross by Felicen Okanda after he had bypassed Daniel Sakari down the left flank, but the referee played the match on.

Patrick Odhniambo’s charges appeared to handle the Tusker Midfield well, always pressing captain, Humphrey Mieno out whenever he received possession of the ball, which made the whole side struggle to click,

In the 30th minute, Homeboyz started getting their groove after a particular period when the visiting Homeboyz fans appeared to get going, injecting fire into their veins. A wonderfully constructed move found Felicen Okanda outside the box, but his shot, which appeared destined for a corner was deflected by Teka away for a corner kick.

Hoemboyz continued to mount some pressure, with Okanda winning a freekick outside the box.Robinson Kamura’s resulting free kick went just wide.

Tusker's first attempt on goal finally came in the 41st minute, but Eric Zakayo hit it just wide. Homeboyz continued looking like the side likely to score, and they nearly found the back of the net through Enock Obiero in the 45th minute, which coincidentally, was their first shot on target.

The Brewers finally went ahead just before the break, when keeper Farouk Shikalo unfortunately mishandled Mike Oduor’s shot from outside the box, fumbling it into his own net.

In the second half, Homeboyz continued to mount pressure and created half chances in the opening minutes of the second half.

The first real chance came in the 58th minute for Tusker, when an expertly constructed one-two between Deogracious Ojok and Humphrey Mieno resulted in Ojok being through on goal, but Shikalo was quick to get off his line to swoop, winning a foul in the process.

Hoemboyz nearly equalized through a set piece situation from a corner kick after pinning Tusker back in the 64th minute, but they failed to find the net, which prompted Odhiambo into making changes.

Vincent Ogola came on for Enoch Agwanda while Dennis Shikayi came on for Okanda. The game suddenly turned even once more, with no one creating any discernible goal scoring chances.

So flat had the game become, that Homeboyz registered their first shot on target of the half through defensive midfielder Photiphar Odhiambo.

Tusker could have added to their tally and burried the game  in the 89th minute when  Mieno's crossfield pass found Eric Otieno on the right flank on the counter attack, but he was indecisive, allowing Homeboyz to get back into shape.

Substitute Lawrence Luvanda also had a clear cut chance to seal the tie yet again for the host side, but he hit the ball straight onto Shikalo's hands.

The result now means Tusker are two points behind Gor Mahia after 29 games played, keeping the race for the title very much open.
