Real Madrid's latest signing, who previously spent time at Manchester United before making his mark at Benfica, brings youth and long-term potential.

Real Madrid is on the verge of announcing another summer signing, with manager Xabi Alonso looking to get his third defensive reinforcement, following Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Left-back Alvaro Carreras, 22, will be acquired from Benfica for a fee matching his release clause, which runs until 2029. The former Spanish U21 international was acquired from Manchester United by the Portuguese side for just €6 million a year ago.

Real Madrid signing him provides Xabi Alonso with another option at left-back, a position currently occupied by Fran Garcia, Ferland Mendy, and, if needed, Eduardo Camavinga.

Alvaro Carreras played two matches for Benfica in the Club World Cup, starting against Boca Juniors (2-2) and playing a half against Auckland City (6-0).

The youngster missed the game against Bayern (1-0) due to yellow card accumulation and was an unused substitute in the round of 16 against Chelsea (1-4 AET).

"Carreras will be a Real Madrid player for €45 million," journalist Alberto Pereiro announced last night on Radioestadio.

The remaining €5 million of the reported fee will reportedly be covered by the sale of youth team player Rafael Obrador, who plays the same position, to Benfica.

The transfer is expected to be officially announced next week when Real Madrid return from the United States, regardless of their progress in the competition under Xabi Alonso.

Alvaro Carreras made 52 appearances for Benfica across all competitions this season, scoring four goals and providing five assists.

The Spanish left-back registered two assists in the Champions League for Benfica, including one in the 4-5 thriller against Barcelona in Lisbon, where he caused Jules Kounde considerable problems.

Interestingly, Alvaro Carreras spent three years (2017-2020) in Real Madrid's academy, La Fabrica, before moving to Manchester United.
