Nairobi United's technical director has reflected on how the team managed to overcome a brutal away challenge in Tunisia to secure their historic CAF Confederation Cup group stage qualification.

Nairobi United’s Technical Director, Salim Ali, has hailed the mental toughness of the players after sealing a historic slot in the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Nairobi United earned their spot in the CAF Confederation Cup by winning the FKF Cup. They advanced past Uganda's NEC FC on the away goals rule after a 3-3 draw on aggregate (2-2 away, 1-1 home).

They then defeated Tunisian heavyweights Etoile Sportive du Sahel 2-0 in the first leg of the second preliminary round before losing the second leg 2-0 away, levelling the aggregate score at 2-2. Nairobi United then won the resulting penalty shootout 7-6 to secure their historic qualification to the group stage.

How Nairobi United Defied All Odds to Qualify for CAF Confederation Cup Group Stages

Speaking after the second leg match against Etoile Sportive du Sahel at the Stade Olympique de Sousse, Nairobi United’s technical director reflected on their away match in Tunisia, explaining that the environment had been extremely hostile.

He added that the atmosphere created by the home fans made it far from comfortable for his team. Salim Ali praised the players for showing remarkable mental resilience, stating that their toughness was the key factor behind their success and suggesting that such a result felt inevitable.

“The match was very hostile…when we came to the field, in terms of fans, it was not conducive for us, but thanks to the players in terms of mental toughness. I believe mental toughness is the key that gave us success. I think it was bound to happen,” he said.

He added that their confidence had been growing over time, pointing to key moments like their FKF Cup final win over Gor Mahia and their strong performance against NEC FC, where scoring twice away reinforced their self-belief.

He noted that even when many doubted them ahead of the clash with Etoile, the team’s unity and support system strengthened their conviction that they could achieve something big.

“After we played, there were some things that you could see. When we played against Gor Mahia and won in the final of the FKF Cup, there was a belief in the team that came,” he revealed.

“When we played against NEC of Uganda and scored two goals away, there was another belief that we had. When we went up against Etoile, people were cancelling us, but with the support we had, we had the belief.

“When we came here, there was a different atmosphere for the players, and what we saw from the players was something amazing. I’ve never seen it before. I believe we have all it takes to progress as a team and make it.”

Nairobi United have been drawn into pot four, grouped with fellow continental challengers Azam FC of Tanzania, Zambia’s ZESCO United, Ivory Coast’s San Pedro, Singida Black Stars of Tanzania, and Morocco’s Olympique de Safi. The draw for the group stages is scheduled to take place later, on Monday, November 3, 2025.
