Tusker's title hopes dealt severe blow as they blow a lead to lose 3-1 to FC Talanta

Tusker’s faint title hopes were dealt an even bigger blow as they lost 3-1 to FC Talanta in a clash that took place in a frankly sorry and dilapidated Jomo Kenyatta stadium pitch in Machakos on Sunday afternoon.

The game, which was serving as a curtain raiser for the AFC Leopards and Posta Rangers clash, saw both sides clearly struggle to fully express themselves in the fear that the slidy state of the pitch would potentially give them injuries.

Tusker started the game brightly, with James Kibande coming close to opening the scoring in the fifth minute. Kibande’s strike was saved by the goalkeeper, and John Njuguna’s follow-up was ruled offside, denying Tusker an early lead.

In the eighth minute, Erick Kapaito set up Dennis Oguta with an excellent pass, but the shot was saved by the goalkeeper, keeping the scores level.

Tusker’s pressure eventually paid off when Kibande was brought down in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty for the home side.

Kapaito stepped up to take the spot-kick, and although his initial effort was saved, he was quick to react to the rebound, slotting the ball home to give Tusker the lead in the 37th minute.

However, Talanta began to find their rhythm and threatened the Tusker goal on multiple occasions.

Brian Opondo, the Tusker goalkeeper, made a brilliant save to deny Leon Ombiji’s shot, while Oguta and Njuguna missed narrowly with their attempts.

Talanta’s persistence paid off just before half-time when December Kasaka found the back of the net, leveling the scores and setting the stage for an intriguing second half.

In the 62nd minute, Kevin Tom Machika capitalized on a defensive lapse to give Talanta the lead, before Mike Jaior sealed the victory with an 82nd-minute strike, securing all three points for the visitors.

The loss for Tusker sees them drop to fourth place in the standings, while Talanta’s victory ensures their safety in the league, adding another twist to an unpredictable season.
