Bruno Fernandes is set for a standout season under Ruben Amorim, who plans to unleash the Manchester United captain.

Bruno Fernandes has started Manchester United’s pre-season in electric form, scoring twice in a 2-1 win over West Ham at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

But beyond the goals, manager Ruben Amorim believes this is only the beginning of what could be Fernandes’ most impactful season yet.

A Strong Start in the USA

The Portuguese playmaker wasted no time reminding fans of his class, converting a fifth-minute penalty before unleashing a stunning strike from outside the box just after half-time.

His brace sealed a narrow victory for United in their opening pre-season fixture in the United States and reinforced his status as the heartbeat of the team.

Fernandes was United’s standout performer in an otherwise disappointing 2024/25 season.

Despite the club’s 15th-place finish in the Premier League, he managed 19 goals and 19 assists in 57 appearances, also helping the Red Devils reach the Europa League final.

Amorim’s Tactical Vision for Bruno

Speaking about Fernandes' role, Amorim was both honest and optimistic:

"It was so clear last season, you can see it with the goals and assists. But it's not just that. Now he has more players to help him lead the group, and that is a good thing," said Amorim as quoted by BBC Sports.

Amorim acknowledged that Fernandes sometimes takes too much responsibility on his shoulders, saying, “Sometimes, the problem is he gets frustrated and loses a little bit of focus of his job. He wants to help the teammates so much, it is not the best thing to do.”

One of Amorim's main adjustments will be allowing Fernandes to operate closer to the box, where he is most dangerous.

"Last year, I felt sometimes I pushed him back to have more possession in the build-up, and we miss Bruno near the box,” he admitted.

New Teammates, New Possibilities

Amorim believes Fernandes will benefit from a more balanced and supportive midfield this season.

The arrivals of players with different characteristics such as Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, coupled with the development of young star Kobbie Mainoo, could allow the United captain to focus more on attacking contributions rather than build-up duties.

"With different characteristics from Bryan and Matheus—and I really like Kobbie Mainoo's game—he will have more help this season," Amorim said.

That tactical freedom, combined with a clearer leadership structure in the dressing room, may unlock a new level in Fernandes' game.

If his explosive pre-season form is any indication, Manchester United fans can expect a captain determined to drive the club forward in 2025/26.
