Manchester United beat West Ham 2-0 in their pre-season outing in America, but Ruben Amorim believes the side must simply get better at one aspect of play.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim expressed his satisfaction after overseeing his first win on American soil — a 2-1 preseason victory over West Ham United — but was quick to point out one tactical area where his side still needs improvement.
The Red Devils, led by a brace from Bruno Fernandes, looked more cohesive than they did last season and noticeably sharper than in their preseason opener against Leeds United.
Amorim, who is taking charge of his first full campaign with United, commended his side’s press and defensive structure, while singling out Rasmus Hojlund, as well as midfielders Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo, for their standout performances.

7 Clubs That Could Afford Alexander Isak’s £250 Million Price Tag
Alexander Isak has told Newcastle United he wants to explore different options, but who could actually afford his £250 million price tag?
"We played in a completely different way from what we saw last season. We weren’t under pressure, we managed to score goals, and that helped us play better," Amorim told reporters post-match.
Possession After Ball Recovery Still Needs Work
"We had some possession, defended well, and pressed high, which helped us win the ball back near their penalty area."
Despite the win and positive signs, Amorim noted that his team needs to be smarter in possession immediately after winning the ball back, particularly in dangerous areas.
"I think we need to improve our possession after winning the ball, so that we can hold it closer to the opposition’s box, where we can look for and find small spaces," he said.
"We can do better on the ball."
United largely controlled the match until West Ham’s goal, and even after wholesale changes introduced 10 younger players late on, Amorim felt the game remained a valuable test of squad depth and adaptability.

Mohammed Bajaber has been training on his own for much of the Harambee Stars' training camp ahead of the upcoming CHAN 2024 after picking up an injury last May.
"Players Need to Read the Game Better"
Amorim also emphasised the importance of tactical intelligence and positional awareness in the modern game, urging his players to better interpret unpredictable situations during matches.
"We have to continue preparing not only for the matches themselves but also to work with the players so they can better read the game," he said.
"Nowadays, you don’t know what will happen. Sometimes midfielders or defenders push into your line. Things are not as clear as before, when you knew they would attack with three or four players. The players need to understand these things."
Amorim’s tactical demands appear to be resonating already, with improved fluidity, pressing, and defensive balance evident against West Ham.
