Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has opted to bring in men who worked under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool to help him beat the Reds to the Premier League title next season.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has shaken up his backroom staff in an effort to revive his team’s fortunes after appointing a new assistant and set-piece coach.

Guardiola has lured Dutchman Pepijn Lijnders to Manchester to work as his assistant, linking up with a man who was Jurgen Klopp’s deputy for most of his near nine-year spell at Liverpool.

Lijnders worked at Liverpool from 2014 initially as part of Brendan Rodgers’ backroom staff before then working under Klopp following the German’s appointment as Anfield manager in 2015.

After a spell away from Anfield as head coach of Dutch side NEC at the start of 2018, Lijnders returned to Merseyside in the summer of that year to reunite with Klopp and worked alongside the German coach during his successful period at Liverpool until leaving with him in the summer of 2024.

He was appointed head coach of RB Salzburg but spent just six months in charge of the Austrian club before being sacked, and has now returned to the dugout as assistant coach again but this time in the blue corner of Manchester.

He will hope to help Guardiola in his bid to knock Liverpool off their perch after Arne Slot’s team won the Premier League title in 2024-25, ending City’s four-year stranglehold of the crown.

Also joining Guardiola’s backroom staff is another former Liverpool employee James French who will work as City’s set-piece coach.

“Their talent, application, work ethic and all-round commitment are totally aligned with the values that underpin how Pep wants football to be played. And I have no doubt at all that both will prove to be very important assets for Pep and his coaching team as we prepare for the Club World Cup and then the 2025/26 season,” said City’s Director of Football Hugo Viana.

City have been shaking up things both in the squad and in the coaching staff after a difficult season by their high standards which saw them finish third in the Premier League in 2024-25 with midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri and forward Rayan Cherki joining ahead of their trip to the United States for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
