Pep Guardiola has given his honest opinion on Lamine Yamal and whether he is capable of eclipsing Lionel Messi's legacy.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has praised FC Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal for his extraordinary potential—but made it crystal clear that comparisons to Lionel Messi are premature, and ultimately, futile.
In an interview with DAZN following Yamal’s dazzling display in Spain’s dramatic 5-4 UEFA Nations League semifinal win, Guardiola lauded the 17-year-old’s maturity and match-winning abilities.
Yamal was named MVP after scoring twice, earning a penalty, and playing a pivotal role in La Roja’s extra-time triumph.

Yet when asked about the rising comparisons between Yamal and Messi, Guardiola shut the door firmly.
Pep Guardiola: There Will Never Be Another Messi
)
“I’m very sorry, but for me there will never be anyone—anyone—in the world like the Argentinian. It’s impossible for there to be another Messi,” Guardiola declared emphatically. “What Lamine shows is an understanding of the game that is truly surprising... but Leo is Leo.”
The City boss acknowledged that Yamal is showcasing rare maturity for his age, but stressed that true footballing completeness takes time.
“You only gain this maturity at 24, 25 years old,” he explained. “Sometimes it seems like he’s a player with so much talent that he has to create a scoring chance with every touch.”
Guardiola likened the public’s expectations of Yamal to basketball star Stephen Curry’s long-range heroics: “In every game, he needs to have a three-point shot, like Curry.
"No. He arrives, makes a play, then rests for three minutes. Then he gets the ball again. And he dribbles and passes again. And then he wins the game.”
Pep Guardiola: Yamal can Become a Huge Star
)
Despite the caution, Guardiola did not shy away from praising Yamal’s immense promise. “The truth is, at Barça, we’re very lucky to have found a youngster with great potential to become a huge star,” he said.
Yamal, who is now being mentioned among the early contenders for the Ballon d’Or, is doing his best to temper the hype. Speaking to El Larguero, he responded with humility:
“This trophy is awarded to the best footballer of the year, the best player in the world, and not for a single match. I would vote for any Barça player from this season.”
For now, Pep Guardiola believes Yamal is on the right path—but insists the world should enjoy his development without placing him in the shadow of the sport’s greatest ever.
