There are five matches to play until the end of the season.

Tusker FC head coach Robert Matano admitted that the title race is still wide open and will battle hard until the end of the season despite facing tough matches ahead.

The Brewers beat Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0 in a league match played at the Ruaraka Grounds thanks to a scrappy goal by Michael Oduor, which was helped in by keeper Farouk Shikalo’s unfortunate fumble.

Tusker are yet to face Kariobangi Sharks, Gor Mahia, Wazito, Posta Rangers, and Vihiga Bullets before the campaign comes to a close.

“The game was tough but we got that goal from Oduor. We were not at our best but we got the result and the three points nonetheless,” Matano said.

Homeboyz were the superior side and created the more realistic chances, showing why they were on such a good run of form ahead of the fixture.

“We expected that. Kakamega Homeboyz have been in good form and have been scoring many goals because they are an attacking team.”

Tusker are now just two points behind Gor Mahia who failed to get all three points away against a struggling Wazito. Quizzed about whether the race was still on, Matano said:

“That is football. This is a marathon and not a 100-meter dash. We will continue working hard until the end of the league. There are very tough matches ahead of us. We cannot say the league is over. It is still on.

“We have been playing many matches and got fatigued. Things worked out because we have been missing many chances and if you do not score, you do not win. Now we at least got one goal. We did not have many chances to score and the game was a close contest.

“We only got one chance and we took it. I am happy."

Tusker will face Kariobangi Sharks, before playing Gor Mahia in what could potentially be a final between both sides in a race for the 2022-2023 Premier League title.
