The diehard AFC Leopards supporter was forced to turn back after his trip came to a halt following the cancellation of the Mashemeji derby on Wednesday.

AFC Leopards’ decision to postpone the Mashemeji Derby might have disappointed a lot of fans but few will feel it as much as one Ingwe supporter.

Wilberforce Luchendo, a diehard Leopards fan, had decided to cycle to Nairobi from Vihiga county to get to the capital just in time for the derby that was initially slated for Sunday March 2.

The match, which Leopards were to be the home team, was initially planned to be held at Kasarani Stadium before it was discovered that the stadium is still a construction site with a decision to move it to Nyayo mooted.

However, on Wednesday evening, the game was postponed after Leopards failed to secure a suitable venue as only Kasarani and Nyayo can play host due its high-risk nature.

That messed up the plans of a number of fans but for Luchendo, it was a massive blow.

A resident of Chandumba in Vihiga, Luchendo had decided to use the only means available to him, a bicycle, to get him to Nairobi for the highly-awaited match and he kept updating fans on his location as he cycled, having embarked on his journey on Tuesday February 25.

By the time the match was canceled, he is reported to have reached Ainabkoi, Uasin Gishu county, leaving him crushed.

As his name suggests, Luchendo (Luhya for journey), had to cancel his journey and turn back, a tough return trip to Vihiga, after his adventure to Nairobi was crushingly brought to a halt.

It is the second time this season that the derby has been cancelled due to unavailability of a suitable venue after Leopards sought permission without success to use either Kasarani or Nyayo last November.

Both stadiums are undergoing a facelift as Kenya prepares for the 2024 African Nations Championships although Nyayo will host Harambee Stars’ 2026 World Cup qualifier against Gabon.
