The season might be over, but Manchester United are not done losing yet
Three days after wrapping up their worst league season in nearly 50 years, Manchester United's troubles followed them to Asia.
A 1-0 defeat to the ASEAN All-Stars in Malaysia has added another disappointing chapter to a campaign the club would rather forget.
Hosts stun the Red Devils
The match in Kuala Lumpur kicked off with an experimental lineup from Ruben Amorim, but United failed to impress in a drab first half.
The only real chance came through Kobbie Mainoo, who weaved his way into the box only to be denied by a smart stop from Patiwat Khammai.
Amorim rang the changes at halftime in a bid to inject some energy into the side, but it was the hosts who seized their moment.
Maung Maung Lwin’s cool finish past veteran Tom Heaton midway through the second half sent the local fans into celebration, and left United chasing shadows.
Despite fielding a mix of youth and senior players, United lacked cohesion, with Amorim cutting a frustrated figure against a team assembled just for the occasion.
Manchester United’s worst ever season
Manchester United ended the Premier League season in 15th place, their worst since 1974, and finished the campaign without silverware after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.
With no Champions League or Europa League football next season, Amorim’s men are using this post-season tour as a reset.
However, if this first match against the ASEAN all-stars is anything to go by, there's still a long road ahead for the Red Devils.
Manchester United’s next fixture is on Friday against the Hong Kong national team, and their fans will be hoping for signs of life from a side that’s stumbled for far too long.
